Aztec
is a small city located in San Juan County in the northwest corner of New Mexico. The population was 6,378 residents as of the 2000 census. The Aztec Ruins National Monument, which preserves ancestral Pueblo structures, stands near the city of Aztec. The buildings within the ruins date from the 11th to the 13th centuries. The misnomer attributing them to the Aztec civilization can be traced to early American settlers in the mid-nineteenth century. The site is a historical property of the National Park Service and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Salmon Ruins and Heritage Park, with more ancestral Pueblo structures, is located a short distance south from the town of Aztec, near the San Juan River. Other attractions include several lovely city parks and the Aztec Museum and Pioneer Village, which offers a wide range of interesting displays from around the world. In the Pioneer Village, visitors can stroll through an old time doctor's office, a sheriff's office, a blacksmith's shop, a jailhouse and more. Aztec is also known for their incredible natural rock arch formations, located in the nearby vicinity of the town.

The northwestern corner of New Mexico offers a year-round pleasant climate. The area has four distinct seasons, although not as marked as other regions of the country. There is an average of 273 days of sunshine in northwestern New Mexico. Annual average rainfall is 7.5 inches and snowfall varies from 12.3 inches to as much as 100 inches in the higher elevations. Prevailing winds are mild, easterly and westerly. The northwestern corner of the state has a terrain of fertile river valleys surrounded by high desert, rolling plateaus, mesas and mountains to the north, east and west.

The closest airports in the area are the Durango La Plata County airport (DRO) located about 26 miles northeast of Aztec in Durango, Colorado, the Cortez Municipal airport (CEZ) located approximately 47 miles northwest of Aztec in Cortez, Colorado, Stevens Field (2V1) located roughly 60 miles northeast of Aztec in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and finally the Jicarilla Apache Nation airport (24N) located around 61 miles east of Aztec in Dulce, New Mexico.
