Gila
is a small community located in Grant County in southwest New Mexico. It is approximately 30 miles from Silver City, New Mexico. Gila was settled in 1884 as a ranching and farming community. Today, the town basically consists of a grocery/hardware store, library, post office, a community center and senior center, medical clinic, K-12 school, several churches, gasoline stations and restaurants. The Double E Ranch, one of the largest working cattle ranches in Grant County, is four miles from Gila. The town is also near the Gila National Forest and Wilderness Area, which has a rich history of the Mogollon and Apache Indians, Spaniards, Mexicans, ranchers, prospectors and miners. The Gila Wildernesses offers unparallel hiking and horseback riding. The San Francisco, Gila, and Mimbres Rivers, the Catwalk, Pueblo Park Campground, Gila Cliff Dwellings, Mogollon Baldy, Castle Rock, Eagle Peak Mountain, Emory Pass, and the Burro Mountains are among the many beautiful attractions in the Gila Wilderness. Other areas of interest include Cooneys Tomb, El Caso Lookout Tower, Beaverhead, Reeds Peak, Frisco Hot Springs and Cherry Creek.

Southwestern New Mexico's weather is classified as semi-arid and is one of the area's biggest draws. Winters are comfortable, with an average high of 55 degrees. Summers are warm but with low humidity. Both spring and autumn are mild, with more wind in spring. Though it does occasionally snow, it usually melts away with the afternoon sunshine. With less than ten inches of rainfall per year, sunny skies prevail and outdoor activities are never canceled due to weather. Another bonus of this semi-arid climate is that southwestern New Mexico has absolutely brilliant sunsets.
