Ruidoso
is a village in Lincoln County, adjacent to the Lincoln National Forest, in south-central New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the population was 7,698. The cities of Ruidoso Downs, Hollywood, Mescalero and Alto are all nearby. Ruidoso is called the "year round playground of the Southwest." It lies in the rugged Sierra Blanca Mountain Range, where it merges with the Sacramento Mountains to the south. Ruidoso, once a sleepy mountain community, is now a rapidly growing resort town due to its gorgeous alpine scenery, the Ski Apache ski resort and the Ruidoso Downs racetrack. Ski Apache is a Mescalero Apache Indian-owned resort and the tribe also operates another resort in the area that includes a casino, hotel and golf course. Just a few of the many attractions in the city include wintertime sleigh rides and carriage rides, chuck wagon suppers, old west entertainment and staged gun fights at a real ranch, horse racing, gaming, wine tasting, panning for gold and more. Ruidoso is home to Hubbard Museum of the American West, and the Ruidoso River Museum, which features everything from war artifacts to jewels of the rich and famous, including Elvis Presley. The mountains and Lincoln National Forest provide fishing, camping, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, skiing, tubing and snow-shoeing. In addition to all this, the region has spectacular scenic drives with breathtaking views, especially during the fall foliage season.

Ruidoso Weather & Climate

South Central New Mexico has an arid, subtropical climate. Winters alternate between cool and windy weather following trough and frontal passages, with warm, sunny periods in between. Light frosts occur many nights. Spring months are warm and can be windy. Short-lived dust storms are possible. Summers begin with hot weather, with some extended periods of over 100 °F (38 °C) weather not uncommon, while the latter half of the summer seeing increased humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, with slightly lower daytime temperatures. The weather cools down quickly in the Autumn and precipitation decreases. Most winter moisture is in the form of rain. Though some light snow falls most winters, it stays on the ground for a few hours, at most.

The closest airports in the area are the Sierra Blanca Regional airport (SRR) located about 9 miles northeast of Ruidoso, the Carrizozo Municipal airport (F37) located approximately 24 miles northwest of Ruidoso in Wauchula, New Mexico, the Alamogordo White Sands Regional airport (ALM) located roughly 41 miles southwest of Ruidoso in Alamogordo, New Mexico, and finally the Roswell International Air Center airport (ROW) located around 64 miles east of Ruidoso in Roswell, New Mexico.
