Winston
is a semi-ghost town located in Sierra County, west of the city of Truth or Consequences. Originally called Fairview, the town was renamed after its founder, Frank Winston, died. At one time, the population of Winston was 3,100, but only a few families remain there today. Old buildings in town include a church circa 1890, general store, a school and the old Winston family home. Winston is also near the town of Elephant Butte and the Elephant Butte Reservoir State Park. Other nearby attractions include Cibola National Forest and Gila National Forest. Terrain in the region ranges from rugged mountains and deep canyons to semi-desert. Due to the extremely rugged terrain, the area is largely unspoiled. Several hot springs are near Winston, including three inside the Gila National Forest. Recreational activities in the area include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, rafting, kayaking and tubing. The community of Winston holds a fiesta the first Saturday in June each year, with a parade, barbecue, flea market and dance. To reach Winston from Truth or Consequences, travel north on I-25 to Exit 83, then left on NM-181, left again on NM-52 and follow the signs. The ghost town of Chloride is only two and a half miles down the road Winston.

Northwestern New Mexico is a region of primarily high desert country, dominated by sandstones and lava flows. Average January temperature is about 35°F (2°C) and July temperatures range from about 78°F (26°C) at high elevations to around 92°F (33°C) at lower elevations. Average annual precipitation averages over 20 inches in the higher elevations. Nearly one-half the annual rainfall comes during July and August, and thunderstorms are common in the summer. Snow is much more frequent in the north than in the south. The northern mountain regions can receive up to 100 inches.
