Carlsbad
is located along the Pecos River in southeast New Mexico's Eddy County. The population was 27,463 as of the 2000 census. It is situated in the Chihuahuan Desert and the Pecos River Valley at an elevation of 3,295 feet. The town of Carlsbad was originally called Eddy. However, with the commercial development of local mineral springs for medicinal qualities, the town changed its name after the famous European spa Carlsbad, Bohemia (which is now Karlovv Vary, Czech Republic.) There are three man-made lakes within fifty miles of Carlsbad, and the Carlsbad Caverns National Park is just eighteen miles southwest of the city. Guadalupe Mountains National Park is forty miles further southwest across the Texas border. Other points of interest near Carlsbad include the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park and Lincoln National Forest. There are numerous recreational opportunities in the area. Lake Carlsbad, which is located in the heart of the city, offers fishing, boating, water skiing, paddle boats and river cruises. Paved walking and biking trails run along the banks of the river, offering lovely views to cyclists and hikers. Other activities in Carlsbad include golf, swimming and tennis or racquetball at one of nine lighted tennis courts and 3 racquetball courts at the Lake Carlsbad Tennis Complex.

Southeastern New Mexico's climate is classified as arid, subtropical. Winters are cool and windy, with warm, sunny periods. Light frost occurs many nights, but snowfall is light and does not last long. Spring weather is warm and windy and short-lived dust storms may occur. Summers are hot with low humidity. Thunderstorms are possible in the latter part of summer. Autumn is mild and dry. Most moisture in southeastern New Mexico is in the form of rain and the amount of precipitation varies greatly depending on elevation. Most rainfall comes during July and August.
