Artesia is a vibrant city located in Eddy County in southeastern New Mexico. It is centered at the intersection of U.S. Routes 82 and 285. As of the 2000 census, the population was 10,692 residents. Artesia is situated between the larger cities of Roswell and Carlsbad and the Texas border is less than 100 miles away. The town of Artesia has eight local parks, which offer picnicking, playground equipment, baseball, volleyball, soccer and tennis courts. Just 17 miles south of Artesia is Brantley Lake State Park, which is the southernmost lake in New Mexico. It offers year-round sports, such as camping, boating, sailing, water skiing and fishing. Several special events are held at the lake each year, such as the "Go-Fly-a-Kite" rally in March and the Kid's Fishing Clinic in May. Other attractions in town include the Artesia Historical Museum and Art Center where local artists contribute to many of the exhibits. History buffs will enjoy the walking tour of Artesia, which gives visitors a glimpse of the past as seen through the eyes of the pioneers and early settlers. The walking tour begins at with the Train Depot & Artesias Visitors Center and proceeds through town, stopping at each of the town's History in Bronze monuments. In addition to all of this, Artesia is situated within easy driving distance to many of New Mexico's natural beauty and scenic recreational areas.

Artesia Weather & Climate

Southeastern New Mexico's climate is classified as arid, subtropical. Winters are cool and windy, with warm, sunny periods. Light frost occurs many nights, but snowfall is light and does not last long. Spring weather is warm and windy and short-lived dust storms may occur. Summers are hot with low humidity. Thunderstorms are possible in the latter part of summer. Autumn is mild and dry. Most moisture in southeastern New Mexico is in the form of rain and the amount of precipitation varies greatly depending on elevation. Most rainfall comes during July and August.
