Chama
is a historical Old West village, located at the base of the 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass in the San Juan Mountains of northern New Mexico. It is bordered by three wilderness areas; the Rio Grande, Carson and Santa Fe National Forests. To the north lies the rugged peaks of the Rocky Mountains, to the east, the San Juan Mountains and to the west is the Continental Divide. The town was founded in the mid-1800s when gold and silver was discovered in the surrounding hills and rivers, and the grazing lands attracted ranchers. The people who settled this area fell in love with the spectacular beauty of the Chama Valley. The town of Chama offers historical walking tours, outdoor recreation, shopping, fossil hunting and panning for gold. Chama Valleys outstanding feature, the famous Brazos Cliffs and waterfall, is a hikers dream. The state parks and forested mountains bring hundreds of visitors each year for fly fishing, horseback riding, river rafting and kayaking, and wildlife viewing of elk, deer, eagle and bear. The Chama, Brazos, and Los Pinos Rivers are well known for their trout fishing. Autumn brings outstanding fall foliage, and winter brings cross country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Chama is also home to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, which takes visitors on a spectacular 64-mile ride. Other attractions include Old Town Chama, the Ghost Ranch Living Museum (home of artist Georgia O'Keeffe,) and the Echo Amphitheater Recreation Area.
