Tres-Piedras
is a tiny community of approximately 1,000 people, located northwest of the city of Taos. This old west settlement sits at the crossroads of US 64 and US 285. Specifically, it's about a half-hour from Taos on Highway 64, which is considered by many to be one of the most breathtaking routes in the state of New Mexico. Tres Piedras is near the Carson National Forest, which lies to the west, and to the east are the spectacular Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Yes - it's an incredibly remote location, but well worth the trip for the scenic beauty alone. Visitors enjoy the quiet solitude and year round recreational opportunities, such as fishing, hiking, hunting and horseback riding. In fact, many of the rental homes are "horse friendly" with corrals, horse sheds, and room for a horse trailer. Nearby attractions include the Earthship Landing Zone, which is a type of alternative housing that incorporates car tires packed with dirt into the construction of the outer walls. At the eastern end of the subdivision is a sample/model earthship that you can go into and learn about how they are built and what they have to offer. Carson National Forest is a short drive from Tres Piedras and is 1.5 million acres of beautiful wilderness and several ski areas, including Taos Ski Valley and Angel Fire Ski Area.

The northern portion of New Mexico brings four seasons to the mountains. Warm summers and cold winters are the norm. Summer highs range in the 70s and 80s with lows in the 40s - even in July and August. Cold evening temperatures in the fall bring beautiful color to the mountains and in winter the area is blanketed with snow. The average temperature in January is 21 degrees and it can often get down into the single digits at night during winter. The average snowfall is 103 inches. Even so, northern New Mexico enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year.

The closest airports in the area are the Angel Fire airport (AXX) located about 40 miles southeast of Tres Piedras in Angel Fire, New Mexico, San Luis Valley Regional Bergman Field (ALS) located approximately 54 miles north of Tres Piedras in Alamosa, Colorado, the Santa Fe Municipal airport (SAF) located roughly 71 miles south of Tres Piedras in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and finally Stevens Field (2V1) located around 74 miles northwest of Tres Piedras in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
