Ramah
is a small community located in McKinley County in northwest New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the population was 407 residents. The village of Ramah lies between the Zuni Indian Reservation, the Ramah Navajo Indian Reservation and the Cibola National Forest. The Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, El Morro National Monument and El Malpais National Monument are also located in the Ramah area. The Cibola National Forest is probably the biggest draw for visitors. It consists of 1,631,266 acres with elevations that range from 5,000 feet to 11,301 feet. The national forest also manages four national grasslands that stretch from northeastern New Mexico into the Texas Panhandle and western Oklahoma. Recreational activities in the area include camping, hiking, picnicking, mountain biking and skiing. The region also boasts abundant wildlife, including bear, mountain lion, antelope and more. Other attractions near Ramah are El Morro National Monument, which is located on an ancient east-west trail in western New Mexico. The main feature is a great sandstone promontory with a pool of water at its base. Over the centuries, travelers have left names, dates and stories on the rock, but in 1906, the U.S. federal law prohibited further carving. El Malpais National Monument, near Ramah, includes lava tube caves for exploring, and also a hiking trail along the rim of the mesa and a picnic area.
