Grants
is a small city located in Cibola County in western New Mexico. It has an estimated population of 8,800. Grants began as a railroad camp in the 1880s, when three Canadian brothers were awarded a contract to build a section of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad through the region. The brothers camp was first called Grants Camp, then Grants Station, and finally Grants. The new town included the existing colonial New Mexican settlement of Los Alamitos. The town prospered as a result of railroad logging in the nearby Zuni Mountains, and served as a section point for the Atlantic and Pacific, which became part of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. After the decline of logging in the 1930s, Grants gained fame as the carrot capital of the United States. The Bluewater Reservoir was built nearby, and the regions volcanic soil provided ideal conditions for farming. Grants also benefited from its location along historic U.S. Route 66, which brought in tourists who catered to the businesses. One of the major attractions in town is the mining museum located on North Iron Avenue in Grants. It's billed as "one of the few uranium mining museums in the world." The self-guided tour is a unique opportunity to see, touch, and absorb the atmosphere of the underground, where you can view the mine at your own pace.
