Rio-Rancho
is located in Sandoval County, with a small portion extending into northern Bernalillo County. It is the third-largest and fastest growing city in New Mexico. The estimated population is 76,000 residents. Rio Rancho is only 15 minutes from Albuquerque's city center, but even closer to the actual city limits. It's approximately 50 minutes south of Santa Fe. The Rio Rancho area was originally part of the Alameda Grant which was founded by the Spanish in 1710. By the early twentieth century, much of the land grant had been sold to land investment companies. A land development company purchased 55,000 acres in the early 1960s and built a housing development called "Rio Rancho Estates." The population grew tenfold between 1970 and 1980, and the City of Rio Rancho was incorporated in 1981. Numerous museums, art galleries, boutiques and fine restaurants are located in the area. Rio Rancho is home to the annual Pork 'N Brew BBQ State Championship, complete with continuous live entertainment, fun jumps, pig races, and lots of good food. The town also hosts the annual Park N the Park car show, which is open to vehicles of 1980 and earlier. Other attractions include the world famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the New Mexico Jazz Workshop and Old Town Albuquerque.

North Central New Mexico has a climate that is usually sunny and dry with relatively low humidity. Brilliant sunshine defines the region, averaging more than 300 days a year. At times there are periods of mid and high-level cloudiness. Extended cloudiness is rare. The region has four distinct seasons, but the heat and cold are mild compared to the extremes that occur more commonly in other parts of the country. Occasional snowfalls are possible but usually melts by mid-afternoon. Spring is unsettled, often windy and cool, but is the driest time of the year. Summer daytime highs range from the upper 80s to the upper 90's, and low 60s to low 70s overnight. North Central New Mexico's climate is classified as arid.
