Sandia-Mountains
are a mountain range located in Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties, just east of the city of Albuquerque. The range is largely within the Cibola National Forest and it's home to the Sandia Peak Ski Area. The highest point in the Sandia Mountains is Sandia Crest at 10,678 feet. The Sandias are noted for their prehistoric archaeology. Sandia Cave is thought to have been inhabited 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. The cave can be accessed via a half-mile trail in Las Huertas Canyon, on the northeast side of the range, near Placitas, New Mexico. Examples of previous Pueblo settlements, now unoccupied, include Tijeras Pueblo and Paako Pueblo, both founded approximately 700 years ago. Sandia Pueblo is a modern pueblo, abutting the Sandia Mountains on the northwest side of the range. The Sandias are popular for hiking, mountain climbing, hang gliding, mountain biking and skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. The Turquoise Trail on the east side of the mountains is a scenic highway that runs from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. Also, the Sandia Tramway takes visitors on a thrilling ride to the 10,000-foot peak of the mountains. For many, however, one of the most beautiful features of the Sandia Mountains is the glowing watermelon colors they display at sunset (the word sandia is Spanish for watermelon.) The Sandias are the most visited mountain range in the state of New Mexico.

Sandia Mountains Weather & Climate

North Central New Mexico has a climate that is usually sunny and dry with relatively low humidity. Brilliant sunshine defines the region, averaging more than 300 days a year. At times there are periods of mid and high-level cloudiness. Extended cloudiness is rare. The region has four distinct seasons, but the heat and cold are mild compared to the extremes that occur more commonly in other parts of the country. Occasional snowfalls are possible but usually melts by mid-afternoon. Spring is unsettled, often windy and cool, but is the driest time of the year. Summer daytime highs range from the upper 80s to the upper 90's, and low 60s to low 70s overnight. North Central New Mexico's climate is classified as arid.
