Roswell
is located in Chaves County in southeastern New Mexico. The population was 45,293 as of the 2000 census. The town of Roswell is a center for irrigation farming, dairy farming, ranching, manufacturing, distribution and petroleum production. It's also the home of the New Mexico Military Institute, founded in 1891. Roswell is probably most well known, however, for what is now called "The 1947 Roswell UFO Incident." The actual crash site of the alleged UFO was actually approximately 75 miles from Roswell, closer to the town of Corona. However, the investigation and debris recovery was handled by the local Roswell Army Air Field. The incident has been the subject of intense controversy, especially since the 1970s. The U.S. military maintains that it was debris from an experimental high-altitude surveillance balloon. The notorious event is celebrated with a four-day UFO Festival in Roswell each year. Other attractions include the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, which is located a few miles northeast of the city on the Pecos River. Bottomless Lakes State Park is located twelve miles east of Roswell and offers swimming, boating, fishing, hiking and camping. Several museums are located in Roswell and a self-guided walking tour showcases the broad range of architectural styles in the city, including Gothic Revival, Greek Revival, Queen Anne, Spanish Pueblo and Prairie Style. Southeastern New Mexico's climate is classified as arid, subtropical. Winters are cool and windy, with warm, sunny periods. Light frost occurs many nights, but snowfall is light and does not last long. Spring weather is warm and windy and short-lived dust storms may occur. Summers are hot with low humidity. Thunderstorms are possible in the latter part of summer. Autumn is mild and dry. Most moisture in southeastern New Mexico is in the form of rain and the amount of precipitation varies greatly depending on elevation. Most rainfall comes during July and August.
