Los-Alamos
is a small community located in a remote region of northern New Mexico. The townsite of Los Alamos or "the hill," is one part of town and White Rock is another part of the town. Both are part of the same incorporated city. As of the 2000 census, the population was 11,909. Traveling to Los Alamos is half the fun of visiting. New Mexico State Route 4 is the main access route that connects the town to other major highways. The western terminus of Route 4 is in the small town of San Ysidro at U.S. Route 550. The route passes through Jemez Pueblo and Jemez Springs and climbs steeply into the mountains and the Santa Fe National Forest. On the east side of the Jemez Mountains, it descends even more steeply on a series of hairpin turns, offering spectacular views into Frijoles Canyon in Bandelier National Monument. The highway continues to a junction with NM 501, leading east into the town of Los Alamos. This is a region of centuries old Puebloan ruins, breathtaking mountain scenery, museums and outdoor recreational opportunites. Engage in hiking and backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing, birding, camping, downhill or cross-country skiing. Los Alamos is home to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which was founded to undertake the Manhattan Project. White Rock/Los Alamos makes a convenient base for exploring many of the diverse cultural sightseeing opportunities of northern New Mexico.

New Mexico's climate ranges from arid to semiarid, with a wide range of temperatures, depending on elevation. Average January temperatures vary from about 35°F in the north to about 55°F in the southern and central regions. July temperatures range from about 78°F at high elevations to around 92°F at lower elevations. Average annual precipitation ranges from 9.5 inches in the desert to over 20 inches at higher elevations. Nearly one-half the annual rainfall comes during July and August, and thunderstorms are common in the summer. Snow is much more frequent in the north than in the south.

The closest airports in the area are the Las Vegas Municipal airport (LVS) located about 5 miles south of Los Alamos in Las Vegas, New Mexico, the Angel Fire airport (AXX) located approximately 48 miles north of Los Alamos in Angel Fire, New Mexico, the Santa Fe Municipal airport (SAF) located roughly 53 miles west of Los Alamos in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and finally the Moriarty airport (0E0) located around 70 miles southwest of Los Alamos in Moriarty, New Mexico.
