Pecos
is a small town located in San Miguel County in northeastern New Mexico. The population as of the 2000 census was only 1,441, but it's one of the fastest growing towns in the county, due to it's proximity to Santa Fe. The village is situated along the Pecos River, which flows from the north out of the Santa Fe National Forest. Pecos sits at the site of a mountain pass that has been used by travelers for centuries. This pass was used by ancient nomadic Indian tribes, by settlers on the Santa Fe Trail, Civil War soldiers and finally by tourists along historic Route 66. Pecos is for those looking for a quiet, simpler place to visit. It's tucked into a river valley at the edge of a vast wilderness area that is pristine in its beauty and offers excellent fly-fishing, hiking and camping. An ancient place with modern conveniences, Pecos offers family-owned lodges, restaurants, shops and guiding services. Nearby is Pecos National Historical Park, which preserves over 12,000 years of rich cultural history including Pecos Pueblo and Spanish mission ruins, the ruts of the Santa Fe Trail and the Civil War Battle of Glorieta. Other notable attractions include Glorieta Pass, Pecos Benedictine Monastery and the Lisboa Springs Trout Hatchery. All of this - yet the metropolitan area of Santa Fe begins just two miles from Pecos.

North Central New Mexico has a climate that is usually sunny and dry with relatively low humidity. Brilliant sunshine defines the region, averaging more than 300 days a year. At times there are periods of mid and high-level cloudiness. Extended cloudiness is rare. The region has four distinct seasons, but the heat and cold are mild compared to the extremes that occur more commonly in other parts of the country. Occasional snowfalls are possible but usually melts by mid-afternoon. Spring is unsettled, often windy and cool, but is the driest time of the year. Summer daytime highs range from the upper 80s to the upper 90's, and low 60s to low 70s overnight. North Central New Mexico's climate is classified as arid.
