Santa-Fe
is the capital and fourth-largest city in the state of New Mexico. Located in the north-central part of the state, it has an estimated population of 72,056. Santa Fe was founded between 1607 and 1610, making it the second oldest city in New Mexico. It also has the distinction of being the highest city, situated at 7,000 feet above sea level in the southern Rocky Mountain foothills. Its' beautiful setting, arts and culture and ancient traditions make it a world-class tourist destination. In 2005, Santa Fe became the first U.S. city to be chosen by UNESCO as a Creative City, one of only nine cities in the world to hold this designation. Santa Fe and the surrounding areas have a high concentration of artists and it now ranks as the nation's third largest art market, with nearly 300 galleries and dealers. There also are more than a dozen major museums showcasing an array of art, culture and history. Santa Fe has long been a center for artists, who have traveled here to capture the natural beauty of the landscape, the flora and fauna. One of the most well-known artists who lived in the area was Georgia O'Keeffe. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum is entirely devoted to exhibitions of her work and associated artists or related themes. Santa Fe is also well known for its cuisine, including creative Southwestern dishes and authentic Italian, Asian, French and others. Outdoor recreation in the area includes skiing, ice skating, river rafting, horseback riding, fly-fishing and hot-air ballooning. There are also an array of world-class spas offered around the city.
