Abiquiu
is a small community located in Rio Arriba County in north central New Mexico. It is about 53 miles north of Santa Fe. In the 1730s, it was the third largest settlement in the New Mexico territory. Abiquiu was the home of artist Georgia O'Keeffe from 1949 until her death in 1986 at 98 years of age. Today, the town is well known for the annual Abiquiu Studio Tour, which takes place each Columbus Day weekend. Another attraction in Abiquiu is The Ghost Ranch Retreat Center, which is the subject of many of the landscapes painted by Georgia O'Keeffe, which was the location of her home and is where her ashes are scattered. The area is filled with history and the natural beauty of the massive red cliffs and mesas, and the beautiful carved canyons, many of which are immortalized in O'Keeffe's paintings. The tiny town of Abiquiu sits alongside Highway 84, which is the road that connects Santa Fe to Chama, New Mexico, then Chama to Pagosa Springs and on to the Wolf Creek Ski Area via Highway 160 East. Abiquiu Lake, which is seven miles north of town, is a recreational lake used for various water sports. Other attractions include the Ghost Ranch Living Museum and the Echo Amphitheatre, a natural amphitheatre, located in Rio Arriba County about 17 miles west of Abiquiu.

Abiquiu Weather & Climate

Northern New Mexico enjoys an arid climate with four seasons. Although the seasons are distinct they are nonetheless mild compared to the extremes of other areas of the U.S. In areas of higher elevation, the sheltering effect of the valley is gone and therefore the region is noticeably cooler and slightly wetter. The mountains and highlands create a "rain shadow" effect, due to the drying of descending air movements, and usually receive very little rain or snow. Average precipitation is 8-9 inches (216 mm) per year.
