Ojo-Caliente
is a small, unincorporated community in Taos County, north-central New Mexico. It lies along U.S. Route 285 near the Rio Grande River, between Taos and Espanola. Santa Fe is approximately 50 miles south. The community of Ojo Caliente is known for its hot springs. In fact, "ojo caliente" translates as "hot springs." The surrounding area is beautiful and diverse, with mountain ranges, river valleys, mesas and high desert plateaus. It's a region of four seasons and abundant recreational opportunities such as alpine skiing, snowboarding and sledding in the winter and river rafting, hiking, mountain biking and fishing in the summer. The legendary hot springs of Ojo Caliente, which are deemed sacred by the Native Americans, have been soothing body, mind and spirit for centuries. Currently, the hot springs spa and resort is the town's largest, private employer and the main attraction of the town. Aside from the spa, other accommodations in Ojo Caliente include several bed and breakfasts, inns and motels. Other nearby attractions include American Artist Georgia OKeefes past home in Abiquiu, Bandelier National Monument, Tsankawee and Posugee Ruins, the Bradberry Science Museum, Santuario de Chimayo and Christ in the Desert Monastery.

Ojo Caliente Weather & Climate

Northern New Mexico enjoys an arid climate with four seasons. Although the seasons are distinct they are nonetheless mild compared to the extremes of other areas of the U.S. In areas of higher elevation, the sheltering effect of the valley is gone and therefore the region is noticeably cooler and slightly wetter. The mountains and highlands create a "rain shadow" effect, due to the drying of descending air movements, and usually receive very little rain or snow. Average precipitation is 8-9 inches (216 mm) per year.
