Hernandez
is a small community in Rio Arriba County, about five miles northwest of Espanola in northern New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,492 residents. Hernandez is most widely known for being the subject of a 1941 Ansel Adams photograph called "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico." Of the photograph, Adams said, "it is certainly my most popular single image. It combined serendipity and immediate technical recall. He felt at the time it was an exceptional image and when he took it, he felt an almost prophetic sense of satisfaction. A 1948 print of this photograph sold for $609,600 at Sotheby's in a Sotheby's New York auction in 2006. Georgia O'Keeffe also painted a church in Hernandez in 1931. The painting is titled, "Another Church, Hernandez, New Mexico." Things to do in the Hernandez area include hiking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, kayaking and biking. In winter, there is skiing and snowboarding at nearby Taos, Angel Fire and Santa Fe. Other attractions in the area include the Anasazi site at Bandelier National Monument and Puye Cliff Dwellings. A few hours away you'll find Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde National Park.

North Central New Mexico has a climate that is usually sunny and dry with relatively low humidity. Brilliant sunshine defines the region, averaging more than 300 days a year. At times there are periods of mid and high-level cloudiness. Extended cloudiness is rare. The region has four distinct seasons, but the heat and cold are mild compared to the extremes that occur more commonly in other parts of the country. Occasional snowfalls are possible but usually melts by mid-afternoon. Spring is unsettled, often windy and cool, but is the driest time of the year. Summer daytime highs range from the upper 80s to the upper 90's, and low 60s to low 70s overnight. North Central New Mexico's climate is classified as arid.
