Espanola
is located primarily in Rio Arriba County, just 25 miles north of Santa Fe and 45 miles south of Taos. A portion of the central and eastern section of the city is in Santa Fe County. The city has a population of approximately 10,000. Many people picture Santa Fe when they think of northern New Mexico, but Espanola actually gives a truer traditional cultural view of the area. It's at the heart of the northern mountain and pueblo communities. A more "rough and ready" type town, you will see trailers sitting squarely beside adobes, alongside tract and luxury housing in Espanola. Low riders still go up and down the main avenue, rumbling alongside old pickups stacked high with firewood. Abuelas y abuelos hunch on storefront sidewalks, pausing to talk to neighbors, just as they've done for nearly four centuries. However, Espanola is undergoing a "face lift," with the refurbishment of a five-block historic district in the downtown area. The Espanola area also offers a variety of outdoor recreation, such as hiking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, kayaking and biking. In winter, there is skiing and snowboarding at nearby Taos, Angel Fire and Santa Fe. Espanola's rich Indian heritage can be seen at the nearby Anasazi site at Bandelier National Monument and Puye Cliff Dwellings. A few hours away you'll find Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde National Park. In addition, several traditional Hispanic and Pueblo Indian fiestas are held in Espanola throughout the year.

Espanola Weather & Climate

North Central New Mexico has a climate that is usually sunny and dry with relatively low humidity. Brilliant sunshine defines the region, averaging more than 300 days a year. At times there are periods of mid and high-level cloudiness. Extended cloudiness is rare. The region has four distinct seasons, but the heat and cold are mild compared to the extremes that occur more commonly in other parts of the country. Occasional snowfalls are possible but usually melts by mid-afternoon. Spring is unsettled, often windy and cool, but is the driest time of the year. Summer daytime highs range from the upper 80s to the upper 90's, and low 60s to low 70s overnight. North Central New Mexico's climate is classified as arid.
