Chimayo
is a community of approximately 3,000, located in Rio Arriba and Santa Fe Counties. It is approximately 40 miles south of Taos and 24 miles northeast of Santa Fe in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It lies along Highway 76, a scenic route through old Spanish villages, which is often called the "High Road to Taos." The town of Chimayo is unincorporated and includes many neighborhoods, called plazas or placitas, each with its own name, including El Potrero de Chimayó (the plaza near Chimayós communal pasture) and the Plaza del Cerro (plaza by the hill.) Chimayo is a picturesque place known for a Catholic chapel, the Santuario de Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas, more commonly known as the Santuario de Chimayó. It was built in 1816 and is known as a healing site. Believers claim that dirt from a back room of the church can heal physical and spiritual ills. It has become known as the Lourdes of America, and attracts close to 300,000 visitors each year, including up to 30,000 during Holy Week. It has been called "the most important Catholic pilgrimage center in the United States" and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Chimayó is also known for the weaving traditions of the Ortega and Trujillo families, who have been weaving in the Spanish Colonial tradition for many generations. Their traditional craft is one of several still practiced in the region, including tin smithing, wood carving, and religious paintings. These activities, along with the local architecture, creates a historic ambiance that attracts many visitors to Chimayo.

Chimayo Weather & Climate

North Central New Mexico has a climate that is usually sunny and dry with relatively low humidity. Brilliant sunshine defines the region, averaging more than 300 days a year. At times there are periods of mid and high-level cloudiness. Extended cloudiness is rare. The region has four distinct seasons, but the heat and cold are mild compared to the extremes that occur more commonly in other parts of the country. Occasional snowfalls are possible but usually melts by mid-afternoon. Spring is unsettled, often windy and cool, but is the driest time of the year. Summer daytime highs range from the upper 80s to the upper 90's, and low 60s to low 70s overnight. North Central New Mexico's climate is classified as arid.
