Cordova
is an unincorporated village in northern New Mexico, located along the scenic "High Road to Taos." It lies about halfway between Santa Fe and Taos. Where State Route 98 dead-ends, the road turns right onto State Road 76 and begins the climb into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The first of a series of little villages on the route is Cordova. It consists of a series of narrow streets above a picturesque river valley. The town of Cordova is known for its traditional woodcarvers who carve santos (saints) in the "Cordova Style," which is unpainted but elaborately carved and features the distinctive grain and shape of the wood. The town is near the village of Truchas, and in fact, the two villages share the same zip code. The population is approximately 1,200 residents. The town has incredible views of the Truchas Peaks (5,000 feet above the community.) Many of the residents work family farms, but many others also commute to jobs in Santa Fe. Many artists have made the village their home, drawn by the natural beauty of the area. The High Road to Taos is a 56-mile scenic, winding road through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It goes through high desert, forests, mountains, tiny towns and Pueblo Indian villages. Scattered along the way are galleries and studios of the traditional artisans. The road has been recognized by the state of New Mexico as an official Scenic Byway.

North Central New Mexico has a climate that is usually sunny and dry with relatively low humidity. Brilliant sunshine defines the region, averaging more than 300 days a year. At times there are periods of mid and high-level cloudiness. Extended cloudiness is rare. The region has four distinct seasons, but the heat and cold are mild compared to the extremes that occur more commonly in other parts of the country. Occasional snowfalls are possible but usually melts by mid-afternoon. Spring is unsettled, often windy and cool, but is the driest time of the year. Summer daytime highs range from the upper 80s to the upper 90's, and low 60s to low 70s overnight. North Central New Mexico's climate is classified as arid.
