Truchas
is an unincorporated village in northern New Mexico's Rio Arriba County. It is located along the scenic "High Road to Taos," about halfway between Santa Fe and Taos. Truchas shares a zip code with the tiny village of Cordova, and has a population of approximately 1,200 residents. The town of Truchas straddles a high ridge and offers incredible views of the Truchas Peaks (5,000 feet above the community.) Many of the residents work family farms, but many others also commute to jobs in Santa Fe. Where State Road 98 dead-ends, the road turns right onto State Road 76 and begins the climb into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and a series of little villages. The first is Cordova. The road then continues to climb to the top of a high mesa into the community of Truchas. The village consists of a scattering of pink adobe houses backed by snow-capped mountains in the background. Many artists have made the village their home, drawn by the natural beauty of the area. The town of Truchas was once the set for the movie version of the John Nichols novel, The Milagro Beanfield War. The High Road to Taos, where Truchas is situated, is a 56-mile scenic, winding road through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It goes through high desert, forests, mountains, tiny towns and Pueblo Indian villages. Scattered along the way are galleries and studios of the traditional artisans. The road has been recognized by the state of New Mexico as an official Scenic Byway.

North Central New Mexico has a climate that is usually sunny and dry with relatively low humidity. Brilliant sunshine defines the region, averaging more than 300 days a year. At times there are periods of mid and high-level cloudiness. Extended cloudiness is rare. The region has four distinct seasons, but the heat and cold are mild compared to the extremes that occur more commonly in other parts of the country. Occasional snowfalls are possible but usually melts by mid-afternoon. Spring is unsettled, often windy and cool, but is the driest time of the year. Summer daytime highs range from the upper 80s to the upper 90's, and low 60s to low 70s overnight. North Central New Mexico's climate is classified as arid.
