Angel-Fire
is small town located in Colfax County in northeast New Mexico. The population was 1,048 residents as of the 2000 census. Angel Fire is also the location of a ski resort with over 500 acres of skiable terrain, a base elevation of 8,600 feet and a summit of 10,677 feet. This tranquil, year-round recreational area is in the middle of a high mountain valley, surrounded by the Wheeler Peak Range. Wintertime activities include skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and sledding. In the summer, trophy fishing is available in Monte Verde Lake and Eagle Nest. Hiking and mountain biking are also popular on the ski mountain (where the lift will even carry your bike.) There are also numerous scenic trails in and around Angel Fire village. Of course, spectacular views of the surrounding mountain peaks and valleys are available anytime of the year. Each summer, the village hosts Music from Angel Fire, a summer music festival which has been an annual event since 1984. Other special events in the area include ArtsFest, Mountain Theatre, and Angel Fire Balloon Rally. Even if you don't ski, you can take the chairlift to the top of the ski mountain and back down again for a thrilling, scenic ride. Other nearby activities include horseback riding, river rafting and four-wheeling.

Northern New Mexico enjoys an arid climate with four seasons. Although the seasons are distinct they are nonetheless mild compared to the extremes of other areas of the U.S. In areas of higher elevation, the sheltering effect of the valley is gone and therefore the region is noticeably cooler and slightly wetter. The mountains and highlands create a "rain shadow" effect, due to the drying of descending air movements, and usually receive very little rain or snow. Average precipitation is 8-9 inches (216 mm) per year.
