Taos
is a town in north-central New Mexico, situated on a high desert mesa at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The population was 4,700 residents as of the 2000 census. The town of Taos is located close to Taos Pueblo, the Native American village and tribe from which the town takes its name. It is also just 17 miles from the Taos Ski Valley. Taos is a place rich in the arts and steeped in history. From trappers and traders to wealthy businessmen and legendary artists, Taos' history is filled with colorful characters. It is home to several museums that offer a glimpse of early settler life, which are National Historic Landmarks. However, it is probably the art that makes Taos so special. It has been said that there are more artists per capita in Taos than any other town in the world - even Paris. Original art can be seen on the walls of restaurants, banks and public offices. Outdoor sculptures also abound. In addition, there are over 80 art galleries and six museums in Taos that preserve and display historic and contemporary art. Two major art festivals are held each year, Fall Arts and Spring Arts, along with several film festivals, a poet and storyteller's festival and four music festivals. For the outdoor enthusiast, Taos offers everything from white water rafting, mountain biking, golf, hiking and horseback riding to skiing, snowboarding, sledding and snowmobiling. The town is also home to the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally, Taos Rodeo and Taos Autumn Run Car Show.

Taos Weather & Climate
Northern New Mexico enjoys an arid climate with four seasons. Although the seasons are distinct they are nonetheless mild compared to the extremes of other areas of the U.S. In areas of higher elevation, the sheltering effect of the valley is gone and therefore the region is noticeably cooler and slightly wetter. The mountains and highlands create a "rain shadow" effect, due to the drying of descending air movements, and usually receive very little rain or snow. Average precipitation is 8-9 inches (216 mm) per year.
