El-Rito
is located in Rio Arriba County along U.S. Highway 84, about 18 miles northwest of Espanola. El Rito was one of the first Spanish settlements in northern New Mexico, and the oldest church in the state is here, restored to its original beauty. Called "an oasis in the beautiful, high desert country of northern New Mexico," El Rito is surrounded by the Carson National Forest and is home to many artists. This old Hispanic community is also home to the campus of Northern New Mexico College. The town was originally named El Rito Colorado, The Red Creek, taking its name from the creek that passes through the village. The nearby Carson National Forest is 1.5 million acres of some of the most beautiful countryside in the United States. It is home to Wheeler Peak, New Mexico's highest mountain. Located within the boundaries of the Carson National Forest are the ski areas of Red River, Sipapu and Taos Ski Valley. The Angel Fire Ski Resort and the Enchanted Forest Cross-County Ski Areas are also located nearby. El Rito is only 28 miles south of Ghost Ranch, which is a 21,000-acre retreat and education center run by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Ghost Ranch was the subject of many landscapes by American artist, Georgia O'Keeffe, who maintained a summer home there in 1934. It was then her permanent residence from 1949 until her death. Ghost Ranch is where her ashes are scattered.

The northern portion of New Mexico brings four seasons to the mountains. Warm summers and cold winters are the norm. Summer highs range in the 70s and 80s with lows in the 40s - even in July and August. Cold evening temperatures in the fall bring beautiful color to the mountains and in winter the area is blanketed with snow. The average temperature in January is 21 degrees and it can often get down into the single digits at night during winter. The average snowfall is 103 inches. Even so, northern New Mexico enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year.

The closest airports in the area are the Angel Fire airport (AXX) located about 30 miles southeast of El Rito in Angel Fire, New Mexico, San Luis Valley Regional Bergman Field (ALS) located approximately 46 miles northwest of El Rito in Alamosa, Colorado, the Jicarilla Apache Nation airport (24N) located roughly 72 miles west of El Rito in Dulce, New Mexico, and finally the Leach airport (1V8) located around 72 miles northwest of El Rito in Center, Colorado.
