Arroyo-Seco
is a small community located in Santa Fe County, just seven miles north of the town of Taos in north-central New Mexico. The population as of the 2000 census was 1,149 residents. Rights to the land that is today Arroyo Seco were made under a grant to Joaquin Codallos y Rabal on October 7, 1745. However, the site was first recorded in a chronicle dated 1716 when it was deeded to General Lucero de Godoy by the Viceroy of Mexico. He never settled the land, however. Permanent settlement of the area began in 1806 when two brothers named Cristobal Martinez and Jose Gregorio Martinez from Rio Arriba County planted crops and built homes. Seco, as Arroyo Seco is referred to by locals, is home to many small specialty shops, restaurants and other businesses. Many of the shops exhibit work by local artists and craftspeople. Nearby, the town of Taos offers over 80 art galleries and several museums and National Historic Landmarks. Outdoor recreational activities available in the Arroyo Seco area include mountain biking, rafting, horseback riding, golf, skiing, sledding, snowboarding and snowmobiling.

Northern New Mexico enjoys an arid climate with four seasons. Although the seasons are distinct they are nonetheless mild compared to the extremes of other areas of the U.S. In areas of higher elevation, the sheltering effect of the valley is gone and therefore the region is noticeably cooler and slightly wetter. The mountains and highlands create a "rain shadow" effect, due to the drying of descending air movements, and usually receive very little rain or snow. Average precipitation is 8-9 inches (216 mm) per year.
