Red-River
is a resort town located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. It is completely surrounded by the Carson National Forest. Situated in Taos County, the population of Red River was 484 full-time residents, as of the 2000 census. This little town is quite a happening place for skiers, hikers or anyone looking for spectacular scenery and abundant opportunities for outdoor fun. Red River began in the 1870s when gold miners and fur trappers came to the area. By 1895, it was a booming mining camp with gold, silver and copper in abundance. The mines shut down a few years later, but the town survived and by the 1930s, tourism was the main industry, as it continues to be today. There are five buildings in Red River that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the Little Red School House, the Pierce Fuller House, which is a two-story cabin, and three other cabins. With its superb location at the foot of the Red River ski area, winter activities include skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling. In summer, it's hiking, mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding and golf. The town is even serviced by a trolley and bus system which provides access into the upper valley. Several special and unique events are held in Red River. An example is the Moreno Valley Cowboy Evenings, held on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays during the summer. In addition to a delicious steak meal, visitors relax and enjoy western music from local musicians.
